As 1 of the initial recipients in Maine of a Pell Grant by the 2nd Opportunity Pell Experimental Web pages Initiative, I cherish these opportunities to stand for education’s opportunity for rehabilitating the imprisoned. My education and learning when incarcerated and my release to the “real world” retains point of view which I offer you gratefully to provide far more perception on this subject matter. Transitioning back to typical living has experienced its worries, but I’m no stranger to life’s obstructions.
My title, Damian, will come from a Greek word “Damianos” meaning, “master, get over, or conquer.” The list of things I have get over is very long: divorced dad and mom, childhood abuse, poverty, habit, ostracism, juvenile incarceration, homelessness, psychological illness, violence, practically a 10 years at the rear of bars, and even my personal undesirable attitude. All just before achieving my 30s.
Having attained the level of education and soundness of head that I hold now is practically nothing shy of a miracle. In the course of my K-12 decades I attended seven diverse schools throughout a few states before slipping by means of the cracks. Eventually, at age 18 I attained a GED with flying hues. I did not lack for intelligence, but I did lack security and self-control. Prior to incarceration, I had an fascination in higher education and participated in some free of charge credit-yielding courses. Having said that, my everyday living situations and choices at the time ended up incongruent with these targets, so I hardly ever finished any courses or enrolled at a college.
Presented the option via Next Chance Pell, I enrolled in lessons with the College of Maine at Augusta (UMA) and began functioning toward an Associate of Arts in Liberal Research even though in prison. In just one semester I realized my abilities. I was not on your own, possibly. There had been about 25 guys in my cohort who fulfilled this commitment. Many of us went past this to go after additional degrees.
Considering that my December release I’ve been busier than at any time. Enrolled in 5 courses, I’ve managed involvement in various group projects although also employed as a laptop info programs (CIS) tutor and a school assistant for UMA. In these roles, I supply in-man or woman as nicely as distant tutoring to the greater community of UMA pupils (and 1 incarcerated UMA student). My program has been overloaded to the level of getting restrictions, but I have assisted numerous other individuals and honed competencies alongside the way. My transcript reveals virtually straight-As as I approach completion of my B.S. in CIS with a Computer software Progress concentration. I hope to go after a M.S. in Cybersecurity afterwards.
There are undoubtedly opponents preventing against plans that assist incarcerated people. Some would be delighted producing-off the total inhabitants of men and women in prison as very little but “bad people”. Admittedly, imprisonment commonly results from weak selections. Yet, people today in prison typically appear from complicated conditions that essential aid in the first put. Quick of obtaining that support they hardly experienced a combating possibility.
The United States that I appreciate is one particular that believes in 2nd likelihood – heck, even third and fourth odds. Fortuitously, it seems like the tide in our state is starting to convert in the appropriate course. This spring, the Section of Education expanded the 2nd Prospect Pell Experiment, offering Pell Grants to hundreds more college students in prisons across the place, and in 2023, all incarcerated students enrolled in eligible jail instruction packages will turn into qualified for this vital sort of financial support.
I hope my tale informs and proves that when we fall, education and learning can support us get again up yet again. Of training course, I’m eternally grateful for the support I have experienced together the way.
